School Counseling Course

BASIC COURSE IN SCHOOL COUNSELING : Jan 2018 – May 2018

Admissions are open for the five month Basic Course in School Counseling. This is an intensive course aimed at training psychological counselors for working in schools and educational institutions.

This is a foundation course in school counseling and provides a laboratory setting in which students master skill sets needed for being a school-based counselor. The goal of the course is to train individuals to offer school counseling services as part of a comprehensive program that addresses the development of students in terms of academic/educational, career, personal/social and emotional skills, as well as school personnel, families, and the community at large. The practice of counseling in school occurs regularly, and the training for this specific area has been largely lacking, thus this course is designed to address ethical, professional, and legal aspects of being a school counselor.

Interested candidates may apply directly for this course by completing the interview process and registering. Please read the information below carefully prior to applying.

Clinical skills training with supervision practicum: A crucial component of our course lies in the training of students in clinical skills which is accomplished through supervision of our students in addition to in class activities. Supervision is a process in which the trainee counselor meets with a supervisor each week to learn skills, discuss his/her development as a person and a counselor and get feedback about their practical work in the course. Supervision is provided by trained/in-training supervisors to ensure all round development of counselors and occurs after the Wed/Sat class described above for two hours either before class on Wed or after class on Sat. To be eligible for supervision, students will have to pass the first theory exam at a 70% or higher rate. If they do so, then they will attend supervision which will occur once a week (separate from class time) for two hours on Wednesday and/or Saturday. This is known to be one of the most enriching aspects of the course and is a crucial component for skill development. We have often noted that students who do well in the course have a great balance of theory and practical knowledge and to encourage more students to do well, we have offered supervision this year only to students who demonstrate competence in theory. We do not believe that individuals should practice without sound knowledge of theory, thus we hope this year’s change will encourage more students to work hard to learn the theory so as to access supervision.

Class experience: All of our training is achieved through role-plays, experiential learning, practicum, lectures and demonstrations, and other learning techniques. A hallmark of HAP training is the energy of its teachers and students and the dynamic nature of the classes. Another important component of our course is the camaraderie and close friendships that develop among our students and staff. We genuinely enjoy each other’s company and choose our students carefully to ensure that our positive energy and enthusiasm continues with each batch.

Course material:  Each enrolled student will be given course material at the start of the course which are expected to be as an adjunct to the teaching and in class discussions. Course material is only a guide and most of the learning in our course happens with attendance in class lectures, discussions, and in class practice. Thus, those who read course material but do not attend the classes which find themselves often falling short of learning. Also, if you attend class without reading the course material, your learning will be limited as well. For best learning, it is extremely beneficial to keep up with class readings and attend classes regularly.

Examinations/Evaluation: Please note that this course involves continues evaluation in the form of in class examinations, participation points, and evaluation of several aspects of professional and personal development. Only students who pass the course evaluations at the required pass grades will be given course completion certificates. Those who do not pass the course but attend and complete the course will be given course participation certificates with an endorsement that they did not pass the course requirements.

Dates and Timings:

The course begins on Jan 6 2018 with twice a week classes (Classes are on: Wed 5 to 8 pm, Sat 9am to 12 pm).

Both classes are mandatory to attend. Students will also be expected to complete reading assignments at home. The overall time requirements for this course will range from 15-20 hours of work each week (inclusive of onsite and at home work).

Who should join

This course is open to all graduates. It is designed for anyone choosing to becoming a school counselor and seeking professional training for the same. Individuals who join could be (1) those who have little or no professional experience but wish to extend their knowledge of school counseling skills (2) counselors, teachers, social workers, educational consultants and personnel who wish to increase their school counseling skills and apply them within their practice.  We have no age limit for our course, so as long as you are emotionally mature and stable, we will consider you for the course.

What can you do after the course?

We are often told by students who have trained with others that HAP courses are very different than other courses of this kind. We have since learned that we are the only training academy that offers the blend of theory and practical skills, in addition to world-class supervision within the twin cities. Our students often choose to continue to work with us after course completion, speaking to our ability to teach and guide as well as form lasting relationships with people we train. You are welcome to request to speak with our past students to obtain their viewpoint about our courses and their utility for you.

Please note that while there are no established rules or standards presently in the counseling area, we recommend that our students follow standards and thus ask that students who want to make school counseling their formal career (part time or full time) complete a Master’s degree in Psychology or an allied helping area. Without a formal degree, our course would not be useful in the future. Please note that with a formal degree, you might be lacking in skills, and thus we feel that our course gives you the chance to learn the needed skills, but we would still recommend getting a formal degree in the area before starting practice. If you have questions about this, call us and we can help you decide whether this course is right for you or not.

Expectation of students

Students who join the HAP are expected to adhere to the highest professional standards of practice. This includes but is not limited to, regular class attendance, punctuality, completion of assigned class work and assignments, excellent record keeping, and respect for everyone that they work with.
