Solution Focused Approaches in Counseling

Solution Focused Approaches (SFA) are goal-directed and collaborative psychological interventions grew from the work of Steve de Shazer, Insoo Kim Berg, and their team. SFBT is an evidence-based therapeutic approach, focusing on strengths and resources to work towards goals rather than on problems and pathology. SFA has taken almost three decades to develop into what it is today, an evidence based psychological intervention. The workshop aims at providing an opportunity to see how SFA works in relation to other models, explore a range of solution focused questions, techniques and use experiential ways to develop the skills required to apply it in practice. It has numerous applications in mental health setting, school setting and in coaching.

Using Mindfulness:

A Workshop for Counselors & Teachers

Mindfulness continues to mystify most of us though we have heard the term and maybe even use it in our life frequently. What does it actually mean and how can we use it in our work as helping professionals?

Come and learn about what it is, how to use it and apply it in your work.  Whether you are a therapist or a teacher, mindfulness can be beneficial to your work and personal life. We will provide training in mindfulness techniques and resources to help you build it into your practice.

What is Mindfulness?

Mindfulness is the mental faculty of purposefully bringing awareness to one’s experience. It can be applied to sensory experience, thoughts, and emotions by using sustained attention and noticing our experience without reacting. Mindful awareness has specific qualities (intentionality, openness, observing) that distinguish it from just being attentive.

How does it help?

Mindfulness has been shown to reduce stress, increasing focus, and reduce rumination among other benefits. It can be used when working with clients who are battling depression, anxiety, ADHD and many other things.  Mindfulness can also benefit therapists/counselors in learning to decrease their own stress and anxiety so that they can be more present with clients in the room.  In addition, it has also been found to increase self-compassion amongst health care professionals.

Who is this workshop for?

Counselors, Psychologists, Psychiatrists, Social workers, Mental health practitioners, Teachers and Students/Individuals in the helping field who want to learn how to use mindfulness in their work.

What you will get from attending this workshop?

In this three-hour workshop, you will have the opportunity to learn more about what mindfulness is and how it can be used with your clients and students.  Participants will also have the opportunity to practice and receive feedback about the techniques demonstrated and taught during the workshop.  Resources will be provided at the end of the workshop so that participants leave with all the tools required to begin using these techniques with their clients and students right away.
